PubWriter FAQ: Create a custom divider, scene (or thematic) breaks for PubWriterhttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/8082016-12-09T22:40:18ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

I will create a new section for what I would consider more advanced tutorials and ones specifically for PubWriter agents, but till then, here you go.

This is the same as the

tag in HTML (which you can also use in Markdown, or you can use
***
). I recommend the
***
since it will transfer over more cleanly to print.

This is a bit longer - 20 mins or so, but it introduces some pretty slick things you can do with PubWriter.

The idea is to use the same scene break you used in your print edition on your website. When used with the font of your book and cover, you can see how seamlessly the experience from your book to your website can truly be.

Mike,

It did actually - I received a file from a client in MS Word, and ran it through the Word to MD converter and the result was all that old school HTML. It probably would work fine, but it makes it hard to proof a document. So the fix was to run the result I got back through Dan's tool.

PubWriter FAQ: Cleaning up htmlhttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/7462016-10-17T22:02:06ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Sometimes, when you convert a document, you'll get some ugly 'old school' html that you'll want to clean up.

Example:

"Dr. Latham has crafted a book that gives leaders and organization architects at all levels."

And you want:

"Dr. Latham has crafted a book that gives leaders and organization architects at all levels."

The tool you want that makes this a piece of cake is at:

PubWriter FAQ: Embedding a PDF on your PubWriter pagehttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/7282016-10-10T23:21:54ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

If you want to embed a PDF on your PubWriter, page, you'll need to insert some HTML:

Download the PDF!

Just change the URL to point the PDF you want to embed.

You will need to link to a PDF somewhere in the cloud (and unfortunately it can't be the dropbox public link). But Box.com does work last time I tried it.

Here's the sample page:

Because you can embed HTML into a PubWriter page, you can use many different online calendars for your PubWriter site.

I recommend creating a public google calendar and embedding it on your PubWriter site like this:

PubWriter FAQ: How to Search a PubWriter Site (or any other site)https://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/7142016-10-06T18:12:36ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

How to Search¶

We may develop more advanced search capabilities for PubWriter in the future, but until we have a solution, you can use Google to search your site by using one of these two techniques.

The first recommendation - if you use Chrome, there's a great plugin you can use.

Otherwise, you can type searches right into the URL bar:

The convention looks like this:

site:<your site url> [search term]

For example, if you wanted to search the PubWriter Site, UkuleleSongbook.com.com for the word white you would type this into Google:

Or you can use Google's Advanced Search page:

Keep in mind that if you have any PDFs on your pubwriter site (in the directory within your pubwriter dropbox), Google will also search the text within the PDFs:

PubWriter FAQ: Tableshttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/6382016-08-17T15:15:45ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Because PubWriter uses Bootstrap, you can create a table with one of the Bootstrap table creation tools. Here's one:

PubWriter FAQ: Watch out for domain registration scamshttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/5182016-06-16T18:34:58ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Unless you registered your domain as private or had us register it for you, you will get scammers trying to get you to renew your domain with them. You'll likely get notices in both snail mail and eMail. Ignore them! The only company that should be contacting you regarding renewals is the company you actually registered your domain through.

Here's an example of a scam email a client of mine just got:

PubWriter FAQ: Working with Drafts (aka Sandbox)https://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/5162016-06-16T14:11:49ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

If you are doing some testing of a new page, or are working on a page you don't necessarily want published on your main pubwriter site, you can utilize your drafts folder.

This is especially important if you doing any testing of html snippets that you want to test the rendering on.

Or...

If you are making changes to an existing page, it's not a bad idea (especially if you want to be sure not to lose anything in the original) to save a copy to drafts, and work on it there.

Just create (or copy) your file into your pubwriter/drafts folder and you can visit the page on your website adding the /drafts/ in the URL.

For example:

http://www.pubwriter.com/drafts/example.md

Notice how I added the /drafts/ before the .md filename?

PubWriter FAQ: Markdown Formattinghttps://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/5022016-06-10T16:03:04ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

You can do a lot of fancy formatting in PubWriter, but it does require that you use Markdown to do it.

Here are a few of the more popular Markdown formatting programs/apps:

What is markdown?

Markdown is how you format your text for your PubWriter site. You can add italics, bold, images, headers, dividers, and more.

Markdown is what is known as a 'semantic editor.'

Some helpful (& recommended) tutorials to start with:

Learn Markdown in 60 seconds

A 10 minute interactive tutorial

Both PubWriter and AuthorDock use a simple form of Semantic Publishing. The semantics you use define how the text is rendered in HTML. The beauty of writing semantically is that your text is 'jail broken' and compatible with nearly any program. The problem of writing in Word, Pages, Open Office, or any other word processor is that your document will contain proprietary formatting unique to the application you built it with. This means unless the user has the same program as you do, you can't necessarily open it edit it. When you start copying & pasting between programs, formatting gremlins tend to creep in with those proprietary programs. Markdown is open source formatting.

Whenever you see .md on a filename, it was saved in markdown.

There are dozens of markdown editors and more are released every year. They are lightweight applications that run on any OS. The best part is that the .md file you create will be compatible with all of them!

Some work better with PubWriter than others. A few of my favorites (PubWriter preferred) include:

Here are a few of the more popular Markdown formatting programs/apps:

Tons of markdown (aka plain text) editors exists for 3 main platforms: Web-based editors, PC, and Mac.

Here are some of the main ones as of early 2017:

You can also search the Apple app store - when I last check, there were dozens. One of the more advanced writers is called Ulysses and it has a huge fan base (it's got a bit more of a learning curve). Scrivner also has an export to markdown option, but I haven't used it yet and my understanding is that Scrivner becomes problematic when you try to setup your print edition (the export to word is not so great).

Any plain text editor will also work. Two of the most popular are Notepad++ on the PC and TextWranger on the Mac. You can preview the results on your own Markdown site or use one of the Markdown previewers like Marked or Markoff (both for the mac). I'm looking for one for the PC.

AuthorDock gives you the ability save files in .md format from both the pages and war rooms modules.

I favor Atom.io because of the ability to seamlessly move between the mac & pc and work with a hacker theme.

Also, there's an extensive list of Markdown editors (including web-based, mac and PC) on Mashable

Anchors within a page¶

Anchors require a little bit of HTML.

First: You have to create a unique anchor (identifier). For example:

In this case, 1 is the anchor.

Second: You have to point to the anchor, in a similar way you always link, but instead of a URL, you put #:

[text](#1)

[text](#1)

You can even link directly to an anchor on a page from another page like this:

http://read.pubwriter.com/path.md#agreements

What that link above takes you to is a specific location (anchored with #agreements) on that page.

First I created an anchor called 'top':
PubWriter FAQ: Images (Tips & Tricks)https://login.authordock.com/boards/128/topics/4322016-04-11T18:07:49ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Images on your PubWriter page must be hosted somewhere online.

Be sure you have the rights to use the images you do use, I know many people who've been hit with big $ penalties for using an image without permission (there are law firms who have built entire businesses around enforcement). Keep in mind under the terms of use, you are 100% responsible for any content you post on your pages.

Dropbox option¶

If you want to use dropbox to host your images (as I often do), you need to modify the URL, unless you are using a Public dropbox folder. And unless you signed up for Dropbox before 2012, you likely don't have a Public folder.

It's an easy switch.

Change:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/e4u7mfni3byibt5/must.jpg?dl=0

into:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/e4u7mfni3byibt5/must.jpg

The main reason I prefer dropbox is because if I modify an image, it will be automatically updated on my PubWriter page as well.

Inserting an image on a Pubwriter (or AuthorDock) page:¶

In order to insert a single image, it has to first exist online and be linkable. Sites like Imgur make this pretty simple, but you can also use Dropbox and Flickr if you pay close attention to the URL.

IF you do use Dropbox (which I recommended), then put all your images in your PUBLIC folder so you easily get the correct dl.dropboxusercontent.com link. If you don't have a Public folder, see the note above.

Basically, you type the following syntax:

![](image url)

If you want the image to have an active link, you do it the same way you create a regular hyperlink in markdown, be sure to pay notice where the
[]
and
()
have been added:

[![](http://selfpublish.org/pix/authordock.jpg)](http://www.authordock.com)

Making images responsive (if it is not being done automatically)¶

Most of our themes automatically make all images responsive, however there may be cases when you need to do this manually.

If the image is not responsive, you'll need to add a little HTML:

class="img-responsive"

To center the image, you'll need to add the

tag.

Here's a video walkthrough:
https://youtu.be/nPiVhq7Hvos

Note It's also important (for the sake of Google searches) to add the alt= tag.

Slideshows¶

If you want to embed a slideshow on a page, there are a few options.

One of the fastest ways is to create an album and embed the code for the slideshow. Many sites offer the option, and Flickr is one of the better-known ones that also provide 1TB of photo storage!

Here's a sample page:

(to view the MD file that created that page, just click on the pencil at the bottom of the page)

I often use Imgur, but you need to create an album first.
