Redmine AuthorDock Tutorials: Get Text Alerts for AuthorDock Updateshttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/12152018-08-29T17:15:26ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

You can now setup text alerts for AuthorDock notifications. When you do, you'll be alerted via text message anytime there's an update on your project(s).

I find it very helpful!

Here's a tutorial:

Loading the player ...

You can add your own cell phone to your account at:
https://login.authordock.com/my/account

If it's Verizon:
AuthorDock Tutorials: Logging Timehttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/10832017-11-14T15:46:09ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

You can log time from a milestone using the formats: 1h, 1 h, 1 hour, 2 hours, 30m, 30min, 1h30, 1h30m, 1:30

Here's a brief tutorial:

Loading the player ...

Mobile Users Video Link

Why log time?

In the case of a POD:

Hours you put into the pod can be logged in AuthorDock. In the spirit of an hour exchange (aka time bank).
The time you log into milestones are 'banked' as credits you can expect to redeem in the output of others.
The idea is to encourage contribution and discourage 'freeloaders.' Every author will find a way to contribute to the whole.

AuthorDock Tutorials: Embedding video into any AuthorDock post (YouTube or Vimeo)https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/9522017-06-01T18:19:37ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

It's very easy to embed video directly in your posts on AuthorDock.

AuthorDock Tutorials: Q&A (easy linking to specific messages)https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/9182017-05-06T21:32:48ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Unlike Milestones items, the information in the Q&A Module is not limited to specific milestones, but rather a collection hub for all information related to a project or topic.

You can use it as a shared digital notebook. The advantage of using Q&A is having a quick way to search and find the information you will likely need again later.

Collaborative Q&A are especially valuable because you are tapping into the collective wisdom of all members in that project.

You can link directly to a war room message very quickly. After you create one, it will assign a specific number that can be found in the URL bar:

Make a note of the number (in this case 718).

You can link directly to it from anywhere else within AuthorDock by using the context
message#718
it will automatically link directly to that Q&A topic.

Here's an example:

AuthorDock Onboarding

Above, I typed
message#718
and it automatically inserted the title of the war room message links to it.

Hope you find it helpful!

Attention users of MS Office 365 outlook.

Do you use the clutter spam filter in MS Outlook?

If you are not receiving notifications from Dropbox or AuthorDock, check it.

The message from dropbox may be in your SPAM folder.

Move it to your inbox and click on the link to accept the share to your PubWriter folder.

AuthorDock Tutorials: The Could > Should > Must priority systemhttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/7202016-10-10T13:49:33ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Within AuthorDock, you'll see the priority system we use is:

TBD

COULD

SHOULD

MUST

This is a useful way to prioritize your punchlist which follows the ideology described below:

First, something comes into our consciousness as a 'what if' - something we could do. Then as we get closer to it, it becomes evident if it's something we have the resources to do. At this time, we may determine it's something we should do. But should do's rarely get done.

It's not until we determine it is a must do item and assigned a resource and deadline, that it actually gets done.

The default is TBD (To Be Determined) so we can gather a full list of all the ideas without necessarily having to decide at that time of creation which priority it ought to be.

~Brian

AuthorDock Tutorials: Need to increase font size / zoom in?https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/7192016-10-10T13:26:44ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

You can zoom in to increase the font size, making it easier to view the AuthorDock page (I often set the view at 150% myself).

You just need to use the zoom feature in your browser. On Chrome (my preferred browser) it's on the 'View' dropdown menu.

Here are fairly universal keys to use across different browsers:

To zoom in, you just press control (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key.
To zoom out, press control/command -.

To return to normal (100%) use the control/command key with the 0 key.

Dear Author,

I will also create this as a milestone item and assign it to you - to bring you up to speed on AuthorDock.

The help link at the top of the page is there to address common questions, and offer you some tips/tricks on AuthorDock.

If anything isn't clear, let me know and I'll point you to the appropriate tutorial or create a new one.

Here's a short video to give you a better sense of AuthorDock:

Loading the player ...

Here's a quick tutorial to help you get started:

And IF by chance, this email went into spam, here's how to prevent the issue from happening again in the future:

https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/239

You will receive an email anytime you are assigned an item or added as a 'watcher' on the item.

https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/279

AuthorDock allows all the 'history' to be kept in one place and we don't have to spend so much time looking for items.

It's helpful to know how to view 'all' items - including those that are closed:

https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/418

Lastly, the module I use the most is the activity tab - since it allows me to quickly see all the updates across all projects I am assigned to.

Change a milestone item to 'Complete' on the status when you've completed it:

Don't forget to use the Help link at the top of AuthorDock to learn some more tips/tricks in using this indispensable tool!

Thanks,
AuthorDock Tutorials: Text Formatting in AuthorDock - A Basic Tutorial of Markdownhttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/3352016-02-16T23:37:01ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Here's a good tutorial:
http://markdowntutorial.com/

Some quick tips:

Section breaks (lines to distinguish sections):

it's 3 asterisks in a row:

Paragraph formatting

Heading 3¶

(you can go up to 6 headings if you really need to!)

Character formatting

ITALIC

or

ITALIC

BOLD

BOLD+ITALIC

<del>strikethrough</del>

Alignment¶

To center text (only available in PubWriter), you need to place

above the text you want to center and

below the text you want centered.

Like this:

THIS IS CENTERED

Bulleted Lists:

Item 1

Item 2

Item 2a

Item 2b

Numbered Lists

Item 1

Item 2

Item 3

Item 3a

Item 3b

Quotes (aka comment boxes, callouts):

3 Levels¶

Quote 1

TEXT

Quote 2

TEXT

Quote 3

PLAIN TEXT

Hidden text¶

One of the cooler tricks you can do with markdown, is wrap any text with < > - for example will hide the word 'text' when it gets converted to markdown.

This is helpful for comments to the author you want hidden from the reader.

Paragraph formatting note:

If you want to do a 'soft break' - you need to add two spaces at the end of the line.

Images¶

In order to insert an image, it has to first exist online and be linkable. Sites like Imgur makes this pretty simple, but you can also use dropbox and flickr. You just need the raw URL to your image in the cloud.

(IF you do use dropbox (recommended), then you will need to replace **dropbox.com with dl.dropboxusercontent.com link.**

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mwhuulb5p51t254/news.png?dl=0
becomes:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/mwhuulb5p51t254/news.png?dl=0

Basically, you type the following syntax:

![](image url)

You can link an image as well:

[![](image url)](hyperlink)

AuthorDock Tutorials: How to open a link in a new tabhttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/2412016-01-22T21:06:09ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

I don't want to make the assumption that this is obvious because I just recently discovered it myself.

But, often times, you will find hyperlinks you need to click on within your AuthorDock documents.

If you are getting frustrated because it always opens the link in the tab you are working on, the solution is to simply do a 'ctrl+click' - when you do, it will open the link in a new tab.

Try it now with This Link

AuthorDock Tutorials: Watching or Unwatching featurehttps://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/2292016-01-20T17:13:07ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

There are a couple of important things to understand about the watch and 'watchers' feature in AuthorDock.

First of all, and most important, if you want someone other than the person the item is assigned to get a notification whenever you make an update, you need to be sure they are listed on the 'Watchers' list:

Secondly, you can add yourself to get email notifications whenever:

A milestone item has been updated

Something has been added/edited in your Pages

Something has been added to a Q&A

Here's how:

Here's how to unwatch if you want to stop receiving notifications:

Also, it is often helpful to turn off notifications for updates or changes you make yourself. Just go into your My Account and check the 'I don't want to be notified of changes that I make myself' option:

AuthorDock Tutorials: Markdown - How to format text in AuthorDock (Advanced)https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/2172016-01-14T18:05:05ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Markdown is the formatting used in AuthorDock and PubWriter.

You can do a lot of fancy formatting in AuthorDock, but it does require that you use Markdown to do it.

Advanced Tutorial¶

Here is a few of the more popular Markdown formatting programs/apps:

Mac¶

Mou - free!

LightPaper

MacDown - like Mou

You can also search the Apple app store - when I last check, there were dozens. One of the more advanced writers is called Ulysses and it has a huge fan base (it's got a bit more of a learning curve).

PC¶

Atom - free!

Markdown Pad - free version will suffice

Also, there's a massive list of Markdown editors (including web based, mac and PC) on Mashable

You are sure to find one that exactly to your liking!

I personally love the NoteBooks app because it allows you to have many notes, folder, and has a nice search function built in. It also runs on the Mac, PC, and iPad!

Option 1: You can simple put
http:// in front of the URL or www.

Option 2: Or, you can link a word like this:
[this link](http://url.com)

Bonus TIP: If you put a standard email address in, AuthorDock will automatically recognize it as an email address.

Quotes (aka comment boxes, callouts):

You can use > or >> or even >>>
depends on how deep you want to go. 99% of the time, just use ' > '

Plain text formatting:

Plain Text Formatting

Hidden text¶

One of the cooler tricks you can do with markdown, is wrap any text with < > - for example will hide the word 'text' when it gets converted to markdown.

This is helpful for comments to the author you want hidden from the reader.

Paragraph formatting note:

If you want to do a 'soft break' - you need to add two spaces at the end of the line.

Images

In order to insert an image, it has to first exist online and be linkable. Sites like Imgur makes this pretty simple, but you can also use dropbox and flickr.

(IF you do use dropbox (recommended), then put all your images in the PUBLIC folder so you get the correct dl.dropboxusercontent.com link.

There's an icon on the editing toolbar:

Basically, you type the following syntax:

![](image url)

Anchors within a page¶

Anchors require a little bit of HTML.

First: You have to create a unique anchor (identifier). For example:

In this case, 1 is the anchor.

Second: You have to point to the anchor, in a similar way you always link, but instead of a URL, you put #:

[text](#1)

Here are a couple screenshots to help you grasp how to do it:

First I created an anchor called 'top':

Second, I created a link to the anchor elsewhere on my page:
AuthorDock Tutorials: How AuthorDock helps get your work done.https://login.authordock.com/boards/48/topics/1122015-12-15T17:55:51ZBrian Schwartzbrian@selfpublish.org

Q. Why don't we do what we know we need to do?

A. It likely stems from one or more of the following:

Have I allocated the necessary space & time to complete the task?

Do I possess all the necessary knowledge, prerequisites, or resources to complete the task?

Are limited beliefs, false fears, or lack of information prevent me from taking action?

Have I lost focus? Did I let myself get distracted?

Here's how AuthorDock can help you address these 4 issues.

(If not, what can I eliminate to make space for it?)

Step 1: Put the task on your AuthorDock punchlist, assign an owner to the task and give the task a start & finish date.

This is a biggie. We often don't achieve a desired result because we lack the confidence to step onto the path of uncertainty that lies ahead. We are attached to the outcome and our ego is preventing us from getting started.
(The work will teach you how. Let go of any attachment to the outcome. Trust the path you are on, and no matter what the result, it is the right result for you. Accomplishment often follows failure, re-frame failure as progress!) This is what The Alchemist, one of the best selling books of all time is about. It's about taking the steps, making the mistakes, and learning from your failures.

Step 3: Get to work! Log your time, track your notes in AuthorDock

Have I let something, someone, or my own lack of discipline get in the way? Has my energy and attention been pulled to the latest ‘bright shiny object’?
(Is the law of diminishing returns in effect? Can you become more disciplined by establishing new habits and thought patterns. Be honest with yourself and admit if your heart is no longer in it.)

Step 4: A timer is a powerful tool to help you stay focused. Close out all distractions until the time is reached when you need to take a break
